Seesaw archived classes: can you still get the photos?
Your child's class disappeared from Seesaw, or the teacher said it's been archived. The good news: archived usually means locked, not deleted. Here's what archiving does, how to find the class, and how to download everything while you still can.
What archiving actually does
At the end of each school year, teachers archive their Seesaw classes. An archived class stops appearing in the normal class list and no longer accepts new posts, but the journal — every photo, video, and teacher caption — still exists.
Whether you can still reach it depends on the school's plan. On paid school plans, families usually keep access to view and download archived journals. On free and starter plans, families have 60 days from the archive date to download; after that, the journal is gone. Not sure which plan your school is on? Assume the stricter one and download now.
How to find an archived class
Archived classes don't show up in the Seesaw app. Go to app.seesaw.me in a browser and sign in with the email connected to your child's account. If the class is archived but still accessible to families, you'll be able to see the journal there — and more importantly, download it.

If the class isn't there anymore
A few possibilities, roughly in order of likelihood:
The download window closed
On free plans, archived journals are removed 60 days after archiving. If the class was archived at the end of last school year and it's now gone, this is the most likely reason.
The teacher deleted the class
Deleting is different from archiving: it removes everything immediately, with no recovery option. It's uncommon, but it happens during end-of-year cleanup.
You're signed in with the wrong email
Family access is tied to the email address the teacher connected. If you have more than one email, try the one that receives Seesaw updates.
If the journal is truly gone, the teacher or school may still have their own copy — teachers can download class archives on their side. It's worth asking before the school year moves on.
Once you have the download
The archive arrives as a zip file: folders of numerically-named photos and videos, with the teacher's captions in separate HTML files. It's a backup, not a photo album. - Can the teacher un-archive a class?
- Teachers can restore archived classes on paid plans while the journal still exists. If the download window has closed on a free plan, there's nothing left to restore — though the teacher may have downloaded their own copy.
- Do downloads from archived classes include the captions?
